First introduced in 2006, the American Gold Buffalo, also known as the Gold Buffalo, is a coin composed of pure, 24 karat gold bullion. Prior to its production in 2006, no 24 karat gold coin had ever been issued by the United States mint before. Then, in 2005, Congress authorized the minting of a 24 karat bullion coin.
In design, the American Gold Buffalo is similar to the Buffalo Nickel, which was issued from 1913 to 1938 and designed by James Earle Fraser, a celebrated American sculptor. On the obverse side of the Gold Buffalo coin is the profile of a Native American Indian with feathers and braids – an homage to the original inhabitants of the land. In 2006, when the coin was first minted, it featured the word “Liberty” in all caps, written along the top right side. The reverse side of the coin features an American Bison, grazing on a patch of grass – an ode to the great expansion westward and the spirit of the early-American pioneer.
These coins are made at the West Point minting facility in West Point, New York, where more than 2 million have been struck since 2006. Two types of American Buffalo are made: a proof coin and gold bullion. The collectable proofs are given a “W” mint mark, while the gold bullion coins don’t have a marking. As with any proof coin, they come in either a hardwood or velvet box, often red or blue; and they come with a certificate proving the coin’s authenticity.
The American Gold Buffalo comes in one denomination, 1 ounce with a value of $50. Here are the coin’s specifications:
For one year only, in 2008, the US mint offered the American Gold Buffalo in the following denominations:
