The American Silver Eagle Type 2 Coin weighs in at 1 oz and is new and improved for 2021, with an all-new redesigned reverse. This coin was created in tribute to the American Eagle on the eve of its 35th Anniversary; The American Eagle was first introduced in 1986. Since its introduction, the American Eagle has been issued yearly and the American Silver Eagle Type 2 is a specialty coin for the year 2021 only.
In design, the coin’s front features a depiction of “Walking Liberty.” The design is of lady liberty who walks forward with the sunrise beginning to show in the distance in front of her. The sun’s beams extend upwards so that it looks as though lady liberty will be soaked in by the sun completely. On the reverse of the coin is a large American eagle soaring as it grasps onto an oak branch. Also on the back are inscriptions, including “United States of America,” “One Dollar,” and then the inscription on all American coins: “E Pluribus Unum.” Plus, this coin also features its denomination, which is 1 oz. fine silver.
In addition to the coin’s pictorial feature, the coin is also marked with the year (2021), and the words “LIBERTY,” and “In God We Trust.” The coin also includes a mint mark, which, in the case of a “W,” means the coin was struck at the West Point Mint.
The American Silver Eagle is the official silver bullion coin of the United States. It was first struck in 1986 and has been very popular over its 35 year history. In 2021, in honor of the coin’s 35th anniversary, the US Mint redesigned the coin’s reverse. It also redesigned the back of the 2021 American Gold Eagle in honor of the 35th anniversary. The new design also saw a brand new security feature: an anti-counterfeit reeded edge. The American Bald Eagle on the back of the gold and silver coins is depicted differently in each. For the Silver Eagle, an American Eagle is in mid-flight.
