COINS

British Gold Sovereign coins first came about in 1987 and have been around ever since. They come in several denominations, including 5 pound, 1 pound, and ½ pound. It makes sense that these gold coins come in so many denominations, because gold is incredibly popular. Gold is purchased by people worldwide as an investment metal. For those looking to protect their hard-earned money with investment-grade wealth, gold coins are an excellent option. It’s also perhaps the most coveted metal out there. It’s also easy to access, with various mints around the globe producing all sorts of gold in different forms, including gold coins and gold bars. Perhaps one of the most popular mints out there is the Royal Mint, which produces British coins and gold products.

Important Information About British Gold Britannia Coins

The greatest gold bullion program in the Royal Mint’s history is the British Gold Britannia coin. It was first struck in 1987 and has a fine gold content of .917. Ever since 2013, the coins have been made of 24-karat pure gold, .9999 fine gold content. Just like the silver coins they produced, the British Gold Britannia coins celebrated the 30th anniversary of their release in 2017. The silver coins celebrated their 20th year at that time.

Specifications of the Modern Gold Britannia

  • 1 Troy oz
  • .9999 pure gold
  • Face value of 100 Great British Pounds
  • Fully backed by Britain’s government.

The Gold Britannia and Silver Britannia are from the same collection and designs on these coins are the same. The only changes that have been made over time are changes to the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse of the coin. On the reverse you’ll see a depiction of Britannia, an image that’s been featured on British sovereign coins since England and Scotland were included in the United Kingdom in the 18th century. For the most recent coins, the image on the Britannia is a new fifth-generation image of Queen Elizabeth II. The effigy was updated in 1998. Ian Rank-Broadley designed that version. The current image was unveiled in 2015, when Jody Clark sat in front of her majesty and completed the newest portrait. At 33-years-old, Clark was the youngest engraver to do it.

Unique Britannia Coins

Like with other coin programs around the world, there are opportunities for interested collectors to get new versions of the Gold Britannia with unique design finishes. One such coin is the British Gold Britannia Monkey Privy Edge coin, minted in 2016. On the reverse of this coin is a depiction of Britannia, who is known as the protector of the United Kingdom. Britannia wears a Corinthian helmet on the top of her head and holds a trident in her hand. The trident is how powerful beings are able to control the sea, like King Neptune. She also wears a shield as a form of protection.

For the 30th anniversary of the Royal Mint’s gold Britannia release, it was re-released. Also in 2017, the Silver Brittania celebrated its 20th birthday. Both the gold and silver anniversary coins were given mint marks that make reference to the anniversary of each program. They also installed a security measure to deter counterfeits.
