What is the Pre-1938 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle?

The Pre-1933 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle was first minted in 1850 by the US Mint. The coin was not the first coin with a $20 face value to be released, yet it is incredibly popular with collectors and the most valuable piece of currency of the era. The coin is composed of .9675 troy oz of 90.0% pure gold. With its brilliantly struck image and valuable metal makeup, this coin is a great investment for those looking to add to their investment portfolio. It’s also great for IRA contributions. In recent years the coin has become popular for its historic value. The $20 Liberty Double Eagle was produced before the cessation of gold currency in the US. It was actually FDR that took America off the gold standard on April 20, 1933. Some people find the fact that this coin was minted while we were still on the gold standard especially appealing and look to invest in the $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle for that reason.

Obverse

On the coin’s front is the iconic Crowned Liberty portrait. On it, the beautiful Lady Liberty wears an inscribed tiara. This portrait is so well known and well loved that it has earned alternative titles, like “Liberty Head Double Eagle” and “Coronet Double Eagle.” The image on the coin is considered by many to be a breathtaking piece of art. The Lady is portrayed beautifully as her face is encircled by a series of stars, which are meant as tribute to the original 13 colonies. Simply by looking at the coin you can see Longacre’s inspirations. His artwork pays special tribute to ancient Greco-Roman currency and the royal effigies inscribed on their coinage long, long ago.

Reverse

On the reverse is the US’ Great Seal. The Great Seal is an emblem of American patriotism and honor as it depicts a strong American eagle holding a shield, branch of olives, and a bundle of arrows. All are symbols of peace, prosperity and the American way. This coin’s reverse has been revised over the years. All in all, there are three different versions in existence. Here they are:

  • The original
  • Type II
  • Type III

Type II involves the following inscription, which was added: “In God We Trust”

Type III involves the word, “Dollar,” which is typed out completely
